| A deluge of gifts for wounded U.S. servicemembers passing through Travis Air Force Base is not necessarily a good thing, say Travis officials.
Bathrobes, sweatshirts, pants and other items have been donated by the local community to help the soldiers that come to David Grant Medical Center on the base.
The soldiers are shuttling through the hospital, usually for a few hours, and are shipped to other American bases for treatment of injuries suffered in Iraq and Afghanistan, say base officials.
But the local outpouring of support is becoming too much for the base to handle.
Federal law prohibits soldiers from receiving anything worth more than $20 from the public.
Additionally, limited space and storage constraints limits the amount of donations that can be accommodated, say base officials.
Since the soldiers are merely transitioning through the hospital, it has been difficult for the base to accommodate people that want to meet the soldiers and give them gifts personally.
Those who want to show their support for the troops can visit www.aafes.org or call 877-770-4438 to purchase "Gifts from the Homefront" gift certificates from the Army and Air Force Exchange Services.
These gift certificates can be sent to an individual servicemember or distributed to any servicemember through any one of seven charitable organizations: American Red Cross, Air Force Aid Society, Fisher House, USO, Coalition to Salute Americas Heroes, Operation Homefront or Operation Interdependence.
Individuals who want to donate general items such as toiletries, individual thank you letters or the gift certificates directly to the ASF can send a letter in advance to: Aeromedical Staging Facility, c/o David Grant USAF Medical Center, 101 Bodin Circle, Travis Air Force Base, 94535-1809. |
